Is this match worth making?
Worth saying plainly: Premier Gold and Gold Medallion sit at a similar height in their respective programmes, so this is a lateral move rather than a promotion. What you gain is mid-tier standing at a second airline, which is worth real money if your flying is genuinely splitting between United and Delta, and worth very little if it is not.
Delta grants the trial for 90 days and states it is complimentary. Keeping Gold Medallion past the trial takes 2,500 USD in Medallion Qualification Dollars on Delta flights inside that window. That is cash spend on Delta tickets, not miles, and not credit card spend.
Two conditions gate the application itself and both are about your Delta history rather than your United status: at least 30 days as an enrolled SkyMiles member, and at least one Delta-marketed flight that was not basic economy in the last three years.
The clock starts fast. The trial begins within 24 hours of enrollment confirmation, so apply only once the Delta flying is booked. Enrollment closes on 31 December 2026, and completing the challenge carries the earned status through 31 January 2028.

Delta matches Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion status from one of 16 partner airlines for a complimentary 90-day trial, beginning within 24 hours of enrollment confirmation. To extend, earn Medallion Qualification Dollars on Delta flights during the trial: 1,250 for Silver, 2,500 for Gold, 3,750 for Platinum. You must have been an enrolled SkyMiles member 30+ days and flown one Delta-marketed non-basic-economy flight in the last 3 years. Enrollment closes 2026-12-31; extended status runs through 2028-01-31.
