Iberia Club has four status tiers to aim for: Plata at 3,500 Elite Points, Oro at 7,500, Platino at 20,000 and Platino Prime at 30,000, counted from 1 April to 31 March. Iberia’s Elite Points page also offers flight routes of 20, 40 and 90 flights to the first three. Oro brings oneworld Sapphire, and Platino brings Emerald.

The first three numbers will look familiar to any British Airways flyer, because the BA Club uses them too. The difference lies in what you are counting. Iberia counts euros rather than pounds, pays a fixed extra on most flights, and lets a heavy short-haul flyer reach oneworld’s top tier on flight count alone. BA is also about to raise its own bar, which widens the gap.

The short answer. If you fly IB-coded flights on low fares, the flight routes are likely to beat the points routes. If you fly BA or American, Iberia can still suit you, but those flights count only towards Elite Points. Oro, not Platino, is the most practical target for most readers, because it already includes lounges with a guest. The Elite Points counter resets on 1 April.

Two lifetime tiers sit above these. Infinita needs 400,000 Elite Points since you joined, and Infinita Prime needs 640,000. Once earned, they are yours for life, and Infinita also stops your Avios expiring. They are a career total, so they do not reset each April.

You will still see the old name. The site and terms now say Iberia Club, but the terms also use Iberia Plus and Club Iberia Plus, and some Iberia URLs still carry it. It is the same programme, and in Miles Mosaic it appears as Iberia Plus.

How Elite Points are earned

Elite Points have followed spend since Iberia’s April 2025 overhaul. Iberia’s rule is 1 Elite Point per euro of net spend, meaning the fare and the operator’s charges plus add-ons such as an extra bag, seat selection or a paid upgrade. Add-ons count even if you buy them after the ticket. Taxes and fees do not count.

Then comes the part that changes the sums. Flights with an Iberia (IB) or Iberia Express (I2) code earn a fixed extra on each segment on Optimal, Comfort and Flexible fares, and Iberia Express’s Classic, Plus and Flex fares map onto those three. A fare outside them earns no extra.

Madrid to Barcelona Puente Aéreo fares are the exception, according to Iberia’s detailed FAQ: 150 on Comfort and 200 on Flexible in Economy, and 300 on Flexible in Business. Negotiated fares and flights in travel packages use separate tables, because the ticket cost is not available. Manage my booking shows what a booked flight will earn.

Iberia’s own example shows the scale of the change. Its member Carmen flies three times to Buenos Aires in Business Comfort, four times to Paris in Economy Comfort and six times to Bilbao in Economy Optimal, and books hotels through Booking.com. Iberia says she would have collected 4,060 Elite Points under the old model and collects 20,170 under this one, enough for Platino.

Flights on other airlines

You do not have to fly Iberia. How a partner flight earns depends on the airline code on the ticket:

  • British Airways and American Airlines: 1 Elite Point per euro of net spend, plus an extra per segment. Below 3,000 miles that is 75 in Economy, 125 in Premium Economy, 175 in Business and 225 in First. From 3,000 miles it is 150, 275, 350 and 450. Basic Economy earns no extra. If Iberia cannot determine the eligible spend, it uses the oneworld table below instead.
  • Vueling and LEVEL: also 1 Elite Point per euro, with their own rules. Extras apply to IB-coded flights they operate, on eligible fares.
  • Other oneworld airlines: distance, cabin and booking class decide, and spend plays no part. This covers carriers such as Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Qatar Airways.

That table favours long-haul premium flyers based outside Europe. Six Business returns of more than 6,000 miles each way on a oneworld partner would earn 21,000 Elite Points, which clears Platino. Discount Economy is another story, at 700 for the same return.

Cards, hotels and shopping

Iberia’s programme FAQ also lists purchases on financial partners’ credit cards and everyday spending with more than 90 associated brands. Those brands earn 1 Elite Point for every 10 Avios, up to a limit. Iberia’s launch guide says that of the total you need for the next tier, up to 30% can come from associated brands. That works out at 1,050 Elite Points for Plata, 2,250 for Oro, 6,000 for Platino and 9,000 for Platino Prime, or 10 times those figures in brand Avios. Anything above the limit is recorded but stays out of your balance until you reach the next tier, and flying has to supply the rest. Iberia-branded credit cards earn the same way, on top of the flight itself, but Avios converted from Amex Membership Rewards or Revolut RevPoints add no Elite Points.

What earns nothing

The general terms, valid from 1 May 2026, and the FAQ exclude several things:

  • Award tickets. Tickets paid fully or partly with Avios earn nothing and do not count towards flights. The exception is a cash ticket discounted with Avios, which earns on the net spend before the discount and does count.
  • Bought or moved points. You cannot buy, gift or transfer Elite Points. Avios transfers, purchases, welcome bonuses and promotional Avios add none.
  • Staff and trade fares. Airline employee, travel agent and commercial-agreement fares earn nothing.
  • Free upgrades. Points follow the fare you paid, whatever a partner gives you on the day.

Points route or flights route?

Most guides list the flight routes as an afterthought. For a short-haul flyer on cheap fares, they may be the main event. Take an illustrative Madrid return costing €120 in net spend on an Optimal fare, which is an assumption for the sums and not a quoted price. It earns 120 Elite Points from spend and 150 in extras (75 on each flight), so 270 in all.

Bar chart of returns needed at 270 Elite Points each. Plata takes 13 returns by points or 10 by flights, Oro 28 or 20, and Platino 75 or 45.
Our illustration: a €120 net-spend return on an Optimal fare, counting two flights per return. Thresholds from Iberia, read on 2 November 2026.

Tier By Elite
Points
By
flights
Fare spend,
flights route
Plata1310€1,200
Oro2820€2,400
Platino7545€5,400

So 45 returns reach Emerald for about €5,400 of fares (roughly US$6,000), though nobody should fly 45 returns for the sake of it. The useful number is the crossover. Each flight counts as one twentieth, fortieth or ninetieth of a tier, so at Platino the flights route wins whenever a flight earns fewer than about 222 Elite Points, and at Plata and Oro whenever it earns fewer than 175 to 188. A connection adds another flight, too, so routing through Madrid can help. Long-haul premium flyers will usually reach the points threshold first, so compare your own average per flight.

The flights need an IB or I2 code, whichever partner operates them, and the fare must be eligible for Elite Points. A BA-coded flight to Madrid earns points but does not count as a flight, even if a booking engine shows it beside Iberia’s own. Check the code before you buy.

Plata: 3,500 Elite Points or 20 flights

Plata is oneworld Ruby. You get priority on waiting lists, Business check-in desks on oneworld flights, Group 2 boarding and free Standard and Rear seats. It has no lounge access.

Iberia’s Plata page says that from 1 April the tier includes free seat selection and no longer includes an extra 32 kg bag, while tickets issued earlier keep both. The page gives no year, but its benefits list already reflects the change, so assume no extra bag on anything you buy now.

Oro: 7,500 Elite Points or 40 flights

Oro is where status changes the airport. It gives access to Iberia lounges worldwide when your flight is operated by the Iberia Group or sold by Iberia, and to nearly 650 lounges on oneworld flights. A guest can join you on the same terms, and the guest needs a qualifying boarding pass for that day. Add Fast Track on Iberia Group flights, an extra 32 kg bag on Iberia Group tickets with no bag or one bag included, and a seat guarantee on full fares. Iberia’s page still lists free VIP parking at Madrid and Barcelona, but says it ended for Oro on 1 September 2026, so ignore it.

For most people who connect through Madrid or fly long haul a few times a year, this is the tier to aim for. Sapphire covers most of what you would notice in an airport, as our oneworld guide explains.

Platino: 20,000 Elite Points or 90 flights

Platino is oneworld Emerald, which the alliance’s benefits grid extends to first-class lounges. On Iberia you add Group 0 boarding, XL seats, Emerald desks at Madrid and Barcelona, free parking at both airports, 8 Avios per euro and lounge access on Vueling flights there. Iberia also lists an extra bag on oneworld flights, though each airline’s own limits apply, and a second bag in Business on Iberia Group flights.

The two free upgrades can go to you or the people you travel with, and the Avios credit lets your balance fall as low as -25,000 for award bookings. Iberia’s earning page says two a year, while the Platino page says two during your validity, so count on two for the tier.

Platino Prime: 30,000 Elite Points

Platino Prime keeps the same Emerald status, so its value lies inside Iberia. The extras are 9 Avios per euro, eight free upgrades over the membership (four a year), a 40,000 Avios credit, free home baggage collection for trips from Madrid, and, according to Iberia’s FAQ, free Avios transfers and free Wi-Fi including streaming. It is valid for two years: you keep it with 30,000 Elite Points in the second year or 60,000 across both. Most of the rest, including the round-the-clock service centre and Emerald desks, also comes with Platino.

Elite Rewards along the way

Iberia pays small Elite Rewards as your yearly total rises, separately from your tier. The counter resets with the year.

Iberia’s earning page also shows double Elite Points at 18,000, but its rewards page omits it, so do not plan around it until your account shows it. The 40,000 reward is the one to know about if you fly with a partner or colleague. Iberia’s example is a member eligible on 11 August 2026, who can assign it until 31 March 2028, and the recipient holds Oro until that date.

Iberia Club against the BA Club

Both programmes share Avios and the same year. The BA Club is raising Silver and Gold from 1 April 2027, as our guide to BA tier points in 2027 explains. The Iberia pages read for this article show no change for 2027/28.

Emerald20,000 or 90 flights20,000 only21,000 only

The euro is the quiet advantage. At the European Central Bank reference rates published on 30 October 2026 (€1 = £0.8338 and US$1.1172), €20,000 was about US$22,300 (£16,700). BA’s 20,000 tier points at 1 per £1 work out at about US$26,800. Iberia converts tickets paid in other currencies at the IATA rate on the date of issue, and extras at the rate on the day you pay, so treat any sum in pounds or dollars here as an estimate.

BA pays more in extras on long-haul premium flights, for now. BA’s flights page sets those extras. Take an illustrative Club World return on a Semi-Flex fare, with about US$2,700 (£2,000) of eligible spend excluding taxes, on two long-haul flights.

One illustrative BA Club World return, credited to either programme, using the ECB rate as a stand-in for IATA’s

Iberia ClubAbout 2,400 + 700 = 3,10015.5%

So on that example BA wins this year, and Iberia wins on flights caught by BA’s 2027 cut. The Iberia line uses its listed extra of 350 for a Business segment of 3,000 miles or more. The result would shift with the fare and the exchange rate, so run your own numbers.

The catch is the flight number. Flight routes count IB and I2 codes only, so a London-based BA flyer cannot use them on BA-coded tickets. A flight also credits to one programme only, so splitting your year between Iberia and BA can leave you short in both. Our guide to status currencies explains why that matters.

Planning your Iberia Club year

The deadline is the same for everyone. Under the general terms, the annual update happens on 31 March using Elite Points for services used up to that date, and any change of tier takes effect on 1 April. The terms do not say when a tier earned part-way through the year starts, so check the “valid until” date on your digital card. The FAQ says Plata and Oro last one year, and you renew by earning the same totals again. Iberia’s FAQ says Iberia Group flights credit within three days and partner airlines within seven, so you can see your position quickly. For a missed credit on Iberia Group or Vueling flights, you have six months to claim.

The terms describe no soft landing. They say only that your benefits change to those of the new tier, and they do not promise a one-tier drop. Unlike the programmes in our soft-landing guide, plan on landing where your points leave you. The one published exception covers parents: you can extend your tier for a further period after pregnancy, birth, adoption or leave of at least eight weeks, with proof, but not for two periods running. Your tier must have come from flights or Elite Points to qualify.

Before 31 March. Check your Elite Points total in your Iberia account, then count eligible IB and I2 flights separately. Whichever route is closer is the one to finish. Add what booked trips should earn, keep brand points within the 30% limit, and avoid leaving the last flight to the final weekend.

Miles Mosaic tracks Iberia status by Elite Points, which helps when Iberia sits alongside other goals on a different calendar. It does not yet count the flight routes, so keep that tally yourself. Our guide to tracking status across programmes covers the wider approach, and our lounge access guide covers what your tier adds to your cards.

Accuracy note. Thresholds, earning rates, benefits and terms were read on iberia.com on 2 November 2026, and Iberia says published tables are indicative and can change. BA figures come from our guide to its 2027 changes, built on BA’s own pages. Fare examples are ours, not quotes. This article is general information, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How many Elite Points do you need for Iberia Platino?
20,000 Elite Points between 1 April and 31 March, or 90 flights with an IB or I2 code on fares eligible for Elite Points. Platino carries oneworld Emerald status.
What oneworld status does Iberia Oro give?
oneworld Sapphire. Oro needs 7,500 Elite Points or 40 eligible IB or I2 flights in an Iberia Club year, and it includes lounge access with a guest.
What is Iberia Platino Prime?
A tier above Platino, reached with 30,000 Elite Points in one Iberia Club year. It has no flight-count route. It keeps oneworld Emerald and adds 9 Avios per euro, four free upgrades a year, a 40,000 Avios credit and free home baggage collection in Madrid.
When do Iberia Elite Points reset?
Every 1 April. Iberia counts Elite Points from 1 April to 31 March and carries out its annual tier update on 31 March, with any resulting change applying from 1 April.
Is Iberia status easier to get than British Airways status?
Usually, if you fly Iberia-coded flights. Iberia counts euros, not pounds, and has shorter flight routes, including 90 flights to Emerald. BA offers no flight route to Gold, and raises Silver and Gold to 8,000 and 21,000 tier points from 1 April 2027.
Do British Airways flights earn Iberia Elite Points?
Yes. British Airways and American Airlines flights credited to Iberia normally earn 1 Elite Point per euro of net spend plus a fixed extra per segment. Other oneworld airlines earn from a table based on distance, cabin and booking class. Only IB and I2 flights count towards the flight routes.
