Why this window matters
Most major airline programmes, including American AAdvantage, run status years that reset on a fixed annual cycle. If you are short of a tier in September, you still have a real window to close the gap. By late December, the options that were available in September (a positioning trip, a bonus-earning promotion, a partner-airline segment) are gone, and the only question left is whether you requalify or reset.
